Theresa Maughan
 2022 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year

Teacher Leader and Educational Equity Advocate

About Me.

Theresa Maughan earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Education from Rutgers University, a Master of Arts in Administration and Supervision from New Jersey City University, and a Master of Arts in American History from Gettysburg University. 
Maughan is a curriculum writer and has developed and presented several interdisciplinary professional development workshops. Maughan collaborates with the Future Educators at The College of New Jersey, and was a presenter at the 2022 and 2023 New Jersey Education Association Convention for the New Jersey Amistad Commission.

Theresa Maughan collaborated with educators across NJ to organize and launch the annual Student Model Gary Convention, which promotes student voice and advocacy on issues of representation, reform and equity in politics, education, health care and social media at a national level.  Maughan received a  2022 - 2023 Pulitzer Center 1619 Grant and created an interdisciplinary curriculum unit about “Race, Medicine, and Health Equity” with four East Orange educators. Her students’ research was shared with students, members of the community and health care representatives at the East Orange STEM Academy “Reimagining Race, Medicine & Health Inequity Fair”.
Maughan was appointed to the New Jersey Department of Education Diverse and Learner-Ready Teachers Initiative committee, the State Professional Learning Committee, and the Morris County Human Relations Commission. 
Maughan is the 2021 Essex County Teacher of the Year, the 2021 New Jersey History Day Senior Division Teacher of the Year, the 2022 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year, and the 2023 Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence recipient.

Collaboration with all stakeholders to create opportunities for lifelong learning, historical inquiry, creativity, and civic action so that our scholars can be upstanders for justice.

My Mission
To expose, empower, and engage scholars, educators, and the community in culturally dynamic and innovative learning experiences that challenge our youth to take action, think critically, and develop an appreciation for historical scholarship.

Recipient of 2023 Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence

Theresa Maughan is a Teacher Leader and Educational Equity Advocate. She was appointed to the NJ Department of Education Diverse and Learner-Ready Teachers (DLRT) Initiative committee, and the State Professional Learning Committee. She is also a recipient of the 2023 Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence.
